The Peoples Democratic Party PDP has described as insensitive comments made by Minister of Finance Kemi Adeosun as regards the economic recession the nation is facing.
Adeosun had said that “recession is just a word” when she reacted to reports released by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, NBS on Wednesday.
In a statement released by its Director, New Media, Deji Adeyanju on Thursday it said the Finance Minister was out of line as recession is not just a word, but the reality of many Nigerians.
The statement reads, “Mrs Kemi Adeosun’s statement yesterday was an out of line, insensitive, ridiculous attempt at signalling. Contrary to her belief, “recession” is not just a word. It’s the hostile reality for millions of Nigerians who face increasing difficulty in putting food on the table and meeting basic everyday financial obligations.
“It’s all the more shocking that her comment was made on the day when Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released a report stating that 4,580,602 have lost their jobs since May 29, 2015.
Recession is a word, its a temporary state of decline in the economy. It didn’t start 6 months ago, recession is as a result of years and years of neglect and over indulgence in a particular sector. Its time Nigerians start facing the reality of what we have done to ourselves, we played this tune and we must dance to eat. We cant be carried like new born babies. Things are bad now, but with time, patience and if we are disciplined in our spending, diversify our infrastructure and invest in the right places we will be out of recession in no time.
