The University College Hospital in Ibadan, Oyo State has just concluded a first of its kind heart surgery on a seven month old baby, recording the feat as the youngest cardiac patient to be operated on in Nigeria.
The surgery was performed on baby girl Enriola, who could not grow at a natural pace because of a hole in her heart. This was diagnosed when she was just three months old.
Two hours after the surgery, the patient’s mother, Olubunmi Fakoya spoke to Channels TV revealing that the surgery had indeed been successful.
Head of Cardiology, Kamar Adeleke (Head, Tri-State Cardiovascular Institute, Delaware, USA), revealed that it was a delicate surgery as Enriola had emaciated so much, her chances were very slim.
The landmark surgery was performed by a consortium of surgeons from Nigeria, America, Canada and India.
