London and back: Osinbajo is not risking a Hye-Jack!

by Alexander O. Onukwue

Once bitten, twice shy.

The last time the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo left this country on an official duty, it almost became a Yakubu Gowon something. But for Senate President Dr Bukola Saraki’s resisted temptation, Prof Osinbajo would have gone from the Aso Rock sofa to a bench in a waiting room.

Intending to visit President Buhari in London, it was announced by the Vice President’s senior assistant on media and publicity, Laolu Akande, that Osinbajo would return “immediately” after the meeting. It was a deliberate exertion to forestall any repeat of an Abaribe-Marafa type event.

Prof Osinbajo is now back to the country and, according to follow-up tweets from Mr Akande, will chair the Federal Executive Council meeting for the week.

Osinbajo’s quick round trip comes within the ambiance of the threats of hyenas and jackals who, in the sense of Senator Shehu Sani and First Lady Aisha Buhari, have been engaged in machinations against the Presidency, not wishing for the return of Buhari. Mrs Buhari’s comments that the hyenas and jackals will be banished from the kingdom was the highlight of social media conversation for much of Tuesday, July 11.

There continues to be the feeling that a so-called cabal has undermined the Acting President in Buhari’s absence, seeking to manipulate the Government in their favour. The last 48 hours have seen different perspectives on who these hyenas and jackals would possibly be and why they are playing the dual role of managing the President’s health status to position themselves for their own gain, while simultaneously undercutting the Acting President.

In seeking to go to Buhari in London, Osinbajo wants to make it clear where his own loyalties lie, in the midst of all the noise. Though a cynic view, there is a possibility of permitting a sense that even he could be among the hyenas and jackals who don’t want Buhari to return if you want to cast your mind back to Tunde Bakare’s “next in line” sermon.

To have gone after the close of the legislative day on Tuesday and return before the beginning of a new one, could not have been mere coincidence. Because though you should always trust responsible people who oppose you to resist the temptation to take advantage of your weakness, you don’t deliberately arm them with tools which make harming you easy to do.

Osinbajo has gone to London and returned. At least this week, there will be no attempts to hye-jack the Government.
