Asa’s April 29 Live In Lagos Concert was billed as an “encore” performance to her wildly successful and popular 2016 concert (her first in Lagos) which wrapped up her world tour. As is par for the course for an artist whose work has been received with only increasing fervour as her career has progressed, Asa came around and set Lagos on fire a second time around and it’s all music lovers have been able to talk about. Here are 3 major takeaways from the show and its reception by audiences.
1. Asa is not one to go without learning from (some of) her mistakes
One of the major issues people had with the first concert last year was the organization, particularly with regards to time. If the response to this years event is anything to go by, Asa took those complaints seriously and worked towards ensuring they didn’t happen again. However, there was still the tiny issue of the “VVIP” tables which many feel is incongruous with the concert experience. Well, a woman has to make her money so the tables stayed. Which might be less a case of not learning from a problem and more about not seeing it as a problem at all to begin with.

2. Asa is already looking to the future
Not the future for herself or of her own career, but of the Nigerian music industry as a whole. Her opening acts – an array of young talent, all incredible vocalists making music as original, confident and challenging as Asa’s own work, all handpicked by Asa herself, prove that this is a woman who realizes the power she wields, and is trying to use it to help the next generation of stars shape the future of the industry.

3. Asa really, really needs to give the people a new album
Call it greed? Call it being spoilt by a musician with a discography so consistent that it’s hard not to want more at any point in time. But a common theme from responses to the concert appears to be that, despite the greatness of the experience, it would have been even better to see her perform new music. Which begs the question – when is the next Asa album coming out? Your guess is as good as ours, but we’ll be waiting right along with you until the day an announcement is made.
