Freedom of speech is something that must be protected. Every man, woman and child should be free to say whatever nonsense they want. That’s something nobody here will ever disagree with, however, there are instances when the media must look the other way, or at the very least present a compelling, winning argument that that follows the underlying principles of objectivity and accuracy and also completely debunks the trash that some Nigerians are capable of spewing from their mouths.
For instance, when the Oba of Lagos said that all Igbos should jump into the Lagoon, he was trashed, and rightly so.
When Donald Trump says something idiotic, heaven and hell join forces to roast him – although it must be said that the alt-right media is an existence that operates beneath the depths of hell. They frequently look at white and call it black without batting an eyelid.
Recently, we’ve been reading about the billionaire kidnapping felon. His life sounds like a bad Danielle Steele novel. It’s a sob story if there was ever such a thing. But the thing here is, he’s kidnapper. He used the anguish of other people to enrich himself and build that terrible excuse for a billionaire’s house in Magodo. As sad as his life was, it should not be presented without the allegations that have been made against him. He deserves no sympathy. We shouldn’t have to read stories about him wanting to become an anti-kidnapping ambassador before he’s been convicted of his crimes. If anything, he should be doing his advocacy from prison.
In the end, by showing off the many homes, and cars he acquired through his illicit activities the media isn’t doing anything but advertising the kidnapping profession.
In reporting, great care must be taken, lest you unwittingly advocate for a social ill so vile that you would not wish it on your worst enemy. Anyway you look at it the reporting on his matter has been an epic fail. Nigerian Newspapers and blogs and news-blog-things, do better!
