Northern Nigeria has more primary schools than South

Nigeria’s population is estimated at about 170 million, and is expected to grow beyond that in the coming years. Nigeria also has an estimated 61.3 percent literacy -with males accounting for more than half of this figure.

According to a UNESCO report, about 10.6 Nigerian children are said to be out of school, with Northern Nigeria recording one of the lowest rate in terms of enrollment and completion of education.

In spite of that, the northern region accounts for the highest number of primary schools in Nigeria.

According to an infographic by BugdIT Nigeria, a civic tech organisation, Southern Nigeria has 19,958 primary schools while the Northern region accounted for 42,448.

Using data obtained from the Office of the National Bureau of Statics, BugdIT determined the number of elementary schools in each of the regions in Nigeria as at 2014.

There are a total of 62,405 primary schools in Nigeria and 23,129,927 total enrollments into these schools and a total of 574,579 teachers in public schools around the country in 2014.

Further breakdown of this figure into region showed that the North-East had 9,777 primary schools, South-South boasted of 5,824 elementary schools, North-West had 19,436, South-East accounted for 5,453 of primary schools while the South-West and North-Central respectively had 8,681 and 13,235

As at 2010, the NBS reports that “South-east had the highest literacy rate in English while South West had the highest
literacy rate in any language. North West had the least literacy rate in English Language, whereas North Central had the least literacy rate in any language.”
