[The Presidential Blog] Why doesn’t the Information Minister have any social media accounts?

It’s weird, right?

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, sworn in as the President Muhammadu Buhari’s Minister of Information and Culture since 2015 doesn’t have any social media account.

To get the full ramifications of this statement, you have to understand the following three factors:

1. It is the friggin’ 2017!

The only person that does not have a social media account in this era is Kanye West and it is the general consensus of the authorised association of normal humans that Kanye is not one of them. Make no mistake, we are not attempting to draw parallels between the phenomenon that is Kanye West and Alhaji Lai Mohammed. It was just noteworthy in order to drive home the point that it is inconceivable that an Information Minister in the year 2017 does not have a social media account.

Now you know why he botched the once in a life time chance to place Nigerian Jollof on the CNN radar for good. Senegal ko Sengal ni.

2. President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is best known for it’s interactiveness on social media

With the Office of the Presidency forcing information down our throats via at least 8 Twitter Accounts, Medium accounts for almost every Ministry, Facebook Account for the Presidency and some officers within it, an Instagram account for the President and another run by his official photgrapher, the last thing you’d expect is that the Minister of Information will be missing in the mix.

3. He is the information minister

That’s just it. He is the Information Minister and there’s almost no effective way of passing whatever information to the people in this century other tha via social media. It is fast. It is immediate. It is broken down. The three ways information is consumed in this era.

That the Minister of Information does not have any account calls into question what he actually does. Even Minister Kemi Adeosun eventually had to open a Twitter account when parodies almost ruined her career last year. Because in two thousand and now, your lack of interaction with social media does not mean that others will not interact on your behalf – and they rarely ever do for your own good. And Minister Lai has a lot of people doing this for him.

On Twitter, the page is called Alhaji Lai Mohammed and the handle is @MohammedLai but sadly not every one of the 6000+ followers of this impostor will read the very funny “bio” that identifies the account as a parody before they swallow whatever unauthorised/unchecked misinformation shared thereon.

On Facebook, we lost count of the numerous Lai Mohammed pages that display the Minister face in their profile image sections.

Yup! See that last one where Minister Lai is supposedl Iran’s Minister of Information?
