Ibrahim, a survivor of the attack, disclosed that the militants had since November, been attempting to attack Lassa, but had been continuously repelled by local vigilantes, until last Wednesday, when they were finally successful in attacking the town with tanks and explosives.

Ibrahim said: “”They [Boko Haram] abducted more than 20 girls from our town and killed many people, mostly old men and women.”

Meanwhile, a security source supposedly confirmed the attack to the news site, saying: “They burnt almost half of the town before they left. Those of us who were lucky fled, but they massacred aged ones and the younger men they could catch.”

The source would also reveal that residents had earlier appealed to security agencies to increase their presence in the area, but their requests were ignored, which made it easy for the insurgents to swoop in and attack. He said: “That’s why the town is now in the hands of Boko Haram,”

Also, a senior military officer attached to the 7th Division of the Nigerian Army based in Maiduguri, confirmed that the military had full knowledge of thee situation in Lassa.
