3 reasons why Governors are yet to appoint Commissioners

Since governorship elections were held in 29 states in April of this year, majority of the states are yet to have State Executive Councils (SECs).

Like President Buhari, the governors have been governing the states, without appointing commissioners.

Here are 3 major reasons why most governors are yet to appoint commissioners;

1. Pending tribunal suits

Several governors had their election victories challenged in the tribunal, immediately after their swearing-in on May 29. A number of them have pending suits at the governorship election tribunals, hence they deem it unwise to appoint commissioners, when their stay as governors, is not yet guaranteed.

2. Salary payment crisis

Most of the states of the federation have been affected by the dwindling revenue of the federal government, and as such, were unable to pay salaries for months, until the bail our funds were recently released. To governors of these states, the appointment and remuneration of commissioners is expensive, and they simply can’t afford it at this point in time.

3. The Buhari effect

President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to appoint his ministers, and consequently, there has been series of ripple effects.

One of which is the fact that the state governors are waiting to see what happens at the Federal level (the ministers appointed by Buhari) before they would appoint their commissioners.
