Inspector-General of Police, Idris Ibrahim has said the slow judicial process was encouraging kidnapping in the country.
He said this while speaking at the monthly IG conference on Wednesday in Abuja.
He said stiff punishment, including capital sentence, can curb kidnapping-for-ransom in the country.
He therefore asked the Niger, Kaduna states and Federal Capital Territory Commissioners of Police to visit and relate with the community members on the dangers of kidnapping.
The IG added, “One of the challenges we have in kidnapping is the issue of punishment. Because these boys see that we parade suspects before the media; they don’t see them going to court; they don’t see them sentenced to death; that is why they feel more relaxed.
“I think we need to have more stringent punishment for perpetrators; that’s the only way we can make headway against kidnapping because they are looking at it like a joke, and that is why some of our youths are getting into it.
“Like I told members of the National Assembly, if we can get a law to check it, you are going to see a lot of changes.”
Idris also announced a posthumous promotion for Inspector Idris Musa, who was killed by Boko Haram insurgents in Kano last Sunday.

The question is can dey maintain it , dis re d cops dey were given sport cars for patrol with maxmum carriage of an officer n a maxmum of 2 outlaws at d bck , but surprisingly d officers pack demselves in d suv sport b4 u knw d car is done talkles of helicorpter dat will be a disaster.
As much as we agree that stiffer penalties be meted out to kidnappers, what is the role of the security apparatus in these matters? They are more reactive than been proactively. Pls, where were the police helicopters, when the igbonla school students were ferried away. The helicopters have a birds eye view of the larger perimeters. Our police are not well trained & motivated, hence the numerous slip offs.
