Robbers attack CBN bullion vans, kill 2 policemen

Armed robbers attacked a convoy of bullion vans belonging to the Central Bank of Nigeria in the early hours of Tuesday at Hawan Kibo along Jos – Abuja road.

It was gathered that the bullion vans accompanied by armed mobile policemen escorts had left Jos in the early hours of Tuesday en route Abuja.

It was also learnt that the robbers who were in military uniforms emerged from the bush after a military checkpoint and attacked a patrol team attached to the Plateau State security outfit, “Operation Rainbow”, killing a mobile policeman on the spot.

It was further gathered that it was at this point that the CBN convoy also ran into the armed robbers who opened fire on it. The incident was said to happened at about 8:30 am.

A shootout between the escorts and the robbers, led to the death of the second mobile policeman, who was part of the convoy. The policeman was identified as Sgt. Anthony Jawa, from Mobile Police Squad (MOPOL) 8, Jos.

Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Tyopev Terna, who confirmed the incident said he was yet to receive the full report from Riyom divisional police. He said that some policemen were killed, but did not know the number.

The CBN bullion vans and escort are at the Federal Road Safety office in Riyom, as at the time this report was filed.
