Herdsmen attacks: Declare state of emergency in Kaduna, Senate tells FG

The Senate on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to declare a security emergency in Kaduna following consistent attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

In a motion sponsored by Senator Danjuma La’ah, he said communities in the state have consistently been under attack by suspected herdsmen since 2011.

He lamented the effects thses attacks have had, including the destruction of lives and properties, displacement of indigenes.

“We are aware that there has been regular attack by armed herdsmen, the latest being on the 15th and 16th of October, 2016 in Godogodo community in Jama’a Local Government Area.

“Subsequent to the attacks, these herdsmen have virtually occupied the displaced communities and are grazing their cattle freely,” he said.

Senator Shehu Saniform Kaduna State while supporting the motion said it will give the senators opportunity to intervene in the crisis.

Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, while speaking said something had to be done.
