150 years after, Apple kills off audio jacks for good

Apple’s latest fancy technology series, the iPhone 7 and 7+ were released on Wednesday to a never-before-seen public outrage for reasons more than one.

Much to the excitement of the bosses at Apple, the new iPhone 7 is their chance to finally get rid of audio jacks.

According to the company, the audio jacks had become archaic, redundant and just pointless in this tech-forward age. Also, the iPhone 7 comes with two back cameras and can survive under 1 meter of water for 30 minutes.

If you’re still dazed about how it will be possible to connect headphones to the device without an audio jack, Apple provides the answer: a stand-alone wireless headphone, that they’ve brilliantly called AirPods.

Killing technologies and replacing them with new ones is one of the things that Apple is well known for. The floppy drive was killed off for good and replaced with CDs in 90s, iPhones were the first smartphones to come without physical keyboards, each time Apple killed something, they came up with something better but not without public outcry tailing their efforts.

Tech analysts anticipated a queer invention was going to come with the iPhone 7 series but no one thought it would be the beginning of the end of audio jacks. They’ve been around so long to die just like that. 150 years! Apple has officially signalled a death penalty for headphone jacks, as other smartphone technology companies are bound to follow suit.

Why audio jacks was next on the slaughter board?

Apple’s senior vice-president of hardware engineering, Dan Riccio justifies the death sentence they’ve put on audio jacks.

According to Riccio, “It was holding us back from a number of things we wanted to put into the iPhone. It was fighting for space with camera technologies, processors and battery life”.

But surely there must be other things that could have been pulled out instead. Apple argues that the future of audio is wireless and headphone jacks deserve to be abandoned without further thoughts.

The iPhone 7 comes with some new, exciting features that could not work perfectly alongside audio jacks. Its ability to stay under water for 30 minutes would have been impeded by the headphone jack. Somehow, water would penetrate through that hole. Now that’s not a thing to worry about.

Out with the old, in with the new

Now that audio jacks are gone, this new replacement has to be worth the effort. Apple has a lot of convincing to do, as it’s hard for most people to come to terms with the exit of audio jacks just yet. The wireless AirPods are small but packed with technology.

It contains a specially developed Bluetooth chip by Apple for connectivity. It’s able to pair with all of the user’s Apple devices, through iCloud.

The AirPods come with a charging case where they can safely sit when not in use, a full charge can power it for 5 hours and the good part, it works with non-Apple devices.

Apple understands that it might take a while before its users finally accept the AirPods so the iPhone 7 pack contains an adapter and lightning headphones. All for users who want to stay wired.

Next year, Apple will mark its 10th anniversary and the tech world are wondering about two very important things- how it will celebrate this day and if the iPhone 8 would double as a drone?
