Lassa fever: 11 states affected, 42 deaths reported [DETAILS]

The recent wave of Lassa fever in the country has affected more than ten states, with 85 reported cases and 42 deaths including two recent deaths in Ondo state, bringing the total number of states affected to eleven.

The states affected are: Bauchi, Taraba, Niger, Kano, Rivers, Edo, Nassarawa, Plateau, Oyo, Gombe and Ondo states.

On the backdrop of these, the senate, at her first plenary sitting this year, summoned the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, to brief the senate committee on health about the recent outbreak of the virus.

The senate, while consoling the family of those who lost their loved ones to the sickness, urged the federal government and other health organizations to sensitize the public on preventive measures for Lassa fever.

They also urged Nigerians to maintain proper hygiene and also report to nearest health center cases of persistent fever.

In another development, the Minister of Health at a press conference in Abuja, on Tuesday, disclosed that no new case of Lassa fever death has been recorded in the past 72 hours.

His statement brings into contention recent media report that two people died from the viral infection in Ondo state on Tuesday.

“As of today, records from our surveillance team show that the number of suspected cases is 93; number of laboratory confirmed cases is 25, and the number of reported deaths is 41, with a fatality rate of 44 percent,” the minister stated.
