According to the BBC, Manchester City are about to sign former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard on a loan deal from New York City FC.

36-year-old Lampard left Chelsea only this summer, signing a two-year contract with New York City in July after 13 years at Stamford Bridge.

Major League Soccer season does not start until March 2015, so the franchise which is partly owned by Manchester City has opted to loan the England player to his former team’s rival.

Although Manchester City declined to comment, it is believed that Lampard could be at their Carrington training ground as early as next week for manager Manuel Pellegrini to monitor his fitness.

The loan deal is likely to run until mid-January, and City plan to register the him for both their Premier League and Champions League campaigns, and he might also be in the line-up when Chelsea face Manchester City at Etihad Stadium on 21 September.

Manchester City won their second Premier League title in three years last season, with Chelsea finishing third.
