Meet the male athletes representing Nigeria at the Rio Olympics

Heart-shattering reports have been going round about how Nigerian Rio Olympics-bound athletes have been abandoned to their fate. Many have now turned to social media to solicit for support from organizations and individuals.

YNaija puts the spotlight on these great men who did not only qualify for the Olympics but have also displayed unparalleled patriotism.

Seye Ogunlewe (100m)

Born on August 30, 1991, Seye Ogunlewe will be representing Nigeria in the 100 metres race. Seye who is currently the fastest man in Nigeria, beat his rivals as he ran a new Personal Best time of 10.12secs to retain his crown and also book a slot to the Rio Olympics.

Ogunlewe who won his first national title in Warri in 2015, finished 6th at the 13th IAAF World Junior Championships in 2010.

Ogunlewe is a one-time All-African Games finalist and National champion.

Egwero Ogho-Oghene (100m)

Egwero Ogho-Ogene is a highly decorated Nigerian sprinter. He is a two-time National Champion, one-time African Champion and two-time African Championships silver medalist.

Egwero also has a World (Continental) Cup Bronze medal, an All-African Games final, 3 African Championships finals and an All-African Games Silver medal to his collection.

He has a personal best of 10.06 secs in 100 metres which he achieved in Maputo (2011) and Brazzaville (2015). Egwero was born on November 26, 1988.

Monzavous Edwards (100m)

Monzavous Edwards,35, started sprinting for Nigeria in 2014 after he left the USA team. Edwards has a personal best of 9.98 secs which he achieved in New York in 2009.

Edwards is a 1 x African champion, 2 x Pan American Games Bronze medalist, 1 x African Championships Bronze medalist, and 1 x World (Continental) Cup Bronze medalist.

He also has  Commonwealth Games final and World (Continental) Cup final to his name.

Oduduru Divine (200m)

Ejowvokoghene Divine Oduduru (born October 7, 1996 in Ughelli, Delta State) is a Nigerian sprinter.

He is a five-time African Junior Champion and was the 2014 World Junior Silver Medalist in the 200 metres. He was the gold medalist in both the 100 metres and 200 metres at the 2013 African Youth Athletics Championships. 

He was a finalist in the 200 m at the 2013 World Youth Championships in Athletics. He won the 200 m at the 2013 African Junior Championships and was also a member of the Gold medal winning 4 x 100 m relay quartet. 

He successfully defended his 200 m title at the 2015 African Junior Championships and also added the 100 m and 4 x 100 m gold medals to his tally. This made him a five-time African Junior Champion. He came second at the trials and has a personal best of 10.25 secs in the 100 metres race.

Orukpe Eraiyokan (400m)

Orukpe Eraiyokan, born December 20, 1993 is a professional quartermiler. He is a two-time All African Games finalist. He has a 400 metres personal best of 44.95 secs.

Antwon Hicks (110m Hurdles)

Antwon Hicks (born March 12, 1983) is an American/Nigerian track and field hurdler who competes in the 110-meter hurdles. He was the gold medalist in that event at the 2002 World Junior Championships in Athletics – the first American to lift that title. He was twice NCAA indoor champion in the 60-meter hurdles.

He opted to run for Nigeria late in his career. He has a personal best of 13.09 secs in 110 metres hurdles.

Ukaoma Miles (400m Hurdles)

Miles Ukaoma (born 21 July 1992) is a US-born Nigerian hurdler. He competed in the 400 metres hurdles event at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing narrowly miassing the semifinals.

His personal best in the 400 metres hurdles is 48.84 seconds set in Warri in 2015.

Oke Tosin (Triple Jump)

Tosin Oke (born 1 October 1980 in London, England) is a Nigerian track and field athlete, who competes in the triple jump. Born a dual national, he initially competed for Great Britain. He was the 1999 European Athletics Junior Championships Champion, and came 5th at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

After multiple indoor and outdoor UK titles, he later switched to compete for Nigeria. Since competing for Nigeria he has won back-to-back African Championships in Athletics titles and the Commonwealth Games championship and is the current All-Africa Games Champion. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Oke finished seventh in the triple jump final, the best Nigerian result of the Games.

Olamigoke Olumide (Triple jump)

Olumide Olamigoke (born 19 September 1990) specializes in the triple jump. He won the silver at the 2015 African Games.

His personal bests in the event are 16.98 metres outdoors (+0.9 m/s, Brazzaville 2015) and 15.87 metres indoors (State College 2016).

Mozia Stephen (Shot Put)

Stephen Mozia (born 16 August 1993) is a US-born shot putter competing internationally for Nigeria. He represented his country at the 2014 and 2016 World Indoor Championships.

He was born and raised in the United States but in 2014 decided to switch allegiance to Nigeria, the birth country of his parents.

His shot put personal bests are 20.46 metres outdoors (Eugene 2014) and 21.11 metres indoors (Nashville 2016). Both are current Nigerian records. In addition, he has a best of 62.80 metres in the discus throw (Jacksonville 2014).

Odele Oghenetega (200m)

In 2015, Odele was Nigeria’s fastest 200m beating Obinna Metuh.
