With unconfirmed reports putting the number of casualties in yesterday’s Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) nationwide recruitment exercise stampede at eighteen, images have started trickling in on what may have pushed the casualty number so high.
The video below shows the rowdy manner question papers were distributed to applicants in the Abuja test centre and the perceived ill-preparedness of officials of the immigration service.
Seven applicants were confirmed dead by officials of the National Hospital in Abuja where several of the dead and injured were rushed with many lying on the bare floor outside the hospital to receive treatment. This is due to the sheer amount of people in need of medical attention.
Minister of Interior, Abba Moro has reacted to the unfortunate incident attributing the deaths to “impatience” on the part of the job seekers. According to him, most of the applicants refused to follow laid down procedure. He stated that over 520,000 job seekers turned up nationwide for an exercise meant to fill only 4,556 openings.
