It was a rowdy scene and open revolt at the US Republican Party National Convention as those opposing the candidacy of Donald Trump broke into chaos, shouting, “Roll call vote! Roll call vote!”
The convention was held in Cleveland on Monday.
The call for a roll call vote is a procedural motion which requires a state-by-state vote by the 2,472 delegates before the convention can begin. Their aim was to cause a lengthy process of voting so late in the day and delay the convention’s opening speakers.
If the agitation had succeeded, it would have embarrassed the campaign of Donald Trump, whose candidacy for the office of the U.S. President has divided the Republican Party.
The Republican Party leadership crushed the attempt even as Trump campaign team and the Republican National Committee staff members, taken by surprise, frantically tried to get enough votes to stop the call for a roll call vote.
Similar group supporting Trump responded with shouts of “U.S.A.! U.S.A.!.”
However, the convention ground quietened for a bit after musical interludes.
The anti-Trump delegates finally lost enough support with the rallying done by the Trump campaign team and the Republican. The crowd broke into chants of “we want Trump!”
