The governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos, Jimi Agbaje has said Nigerians need to stop worshipping their politicians and begin to hold their elected leaders accountable.

He said this on Friday, November 16, 2018, in a question and answer session on Twitter.

He was asked, “Why is it hard for most of you Africa politicians to keep up with your promises?” and he replied, “Citizens need to stop politician worship and hold their elected officials accountable.”

On waste disposal that has become a serious cause for concern, Agbaje said, “this is a task for all citizens. The agencies in charge have a mandate but Lagosians too have to be reorientated on recycling and waste disposal.”

Touching on the other menace that has plagued residents for a rather long time now – traffic – the governorship candidate said, “I’ve had several tweets that touch on this but I’ll try to summarise. While we plan for long-term infrastructural development, we must focus on repairing major link roads and optimise our current public transportation routes and alternatives like water and rail.”

Agbaje, 61, insisted that he never gave up on people who believed in him, even though he has not been much “around” since he lost the election in 2015.

“I know one of the misconceptions about my absence was that I gave up on Lagos but I did not. We contested the results and appealed, all the way to the supreme court, we regrouped as a party to further position ourselves against an incumbent government.

“With the strides that we’ve made within the party, as well as the learnings from the last elections, and the desire of the people for a better Lagos. I feel we are at a better stance to win Lagos now than 4 years ago,” he said.

When asked why his level of awareness and campaign is low and how APC have posters all over the state, he said, “APC breaking rules have shown what they are about.”
