It’s no secret that relationships have been a key part of driving the content on the Big Brother Naija reality TV show. There are fans who tune in just to watch ship sails and these fans are numerous in volume. So it’s rather interesting or perhaps refreshing, that no one has jumped into a ship just yet.
As much as people love relationships in the Big Brother House, it’s obvious that they don’t like ships that seem inorganic. Romantic relationships that look like they are just a strategy for the show, feels counterintuitive to presenting good content for two reasons, the first is the fact that the tension was not built over time and organically, so therefore it is hard to revel in the beauty of a hard fought relationship, and secondly, the relationship stands the risk of masking the true personas of the two housemates involved.
Point in case was the Lilo and Eric ship last year which fell apart. Not only did it feel inorganic, it they also seem devoid of their own separate personalities, Fans didn’t get an opportunity to know the real Lilo or Eric outside of their relationships, and so fans didn’t hesitate to vote them out once they were up for eviction.
This year, it’s ironic how for White Money and Maria, these factors would not be a problem. They have both already established their individual identities, and the fans love it, and more than that they have shown that they are just naturally attracted to each other. It’s undeniable how alive they are when they are in each other’s company. The conversation is interesting, the play fighting is fun, they look cute together, and them being together does not stop them from being a part of the House, in fact they balance it quite well.
They honestly seem good for each other, be it as besties, or as a couple. And although many would love the latter to be the case, the former is most likely. Nothing they’ve done so far suggests that their relationship is not platonic, coupled with the fact that they both seem very focused on the game.
Regardless, the question still remains, whether this is going to end in a romantic relationship or whether it is going to continue as a friendship. Personally, I would be elated to see the ship sail.
For Chinedu Okafor, its all about making an impact with words, creating a profound impression on the audience with the intended narrative.
