“Jonathan is weak and incompetent”, “Obasanjo will die” | A timeline of Nnamdi Kanu’s utterances since he was granted bail

Since his arrest in October 2015, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu has only gained more popularity.

Kanu had started his agitation for the independence of Biafra through his broadcast on ‘Radio Biafra’ in London.

He was later picked up by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) when he arrived Nigeria and charged with treasonable felony.

Kanu was however granted bail with stringent conditions by Justice Binta Nyako.

Here’s a timeline of all the things Kanu has said and done since his release from prison;

April 28, 2017: Nnamdi Kanu, after meeting his bail conditions was released from Kuje prison Abuja, where he had been in detention for about two years.

May 1, 2017: The IPOB leader paid a visit to former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode who showed solidarity towards him while in prison.

Fani-Kayode described him as the “lion of the East.”

May 3, 2017: Nnamdi Kanu held a meeting with senators from the South East, at the Apo legislative residence of Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu.

May 9, 2017: In a visit to  the Eastern Consultative Assembly and the Igbo Youth Movement, Kanu stated that he was born to champion the Biafran struggle.

He vowed not to give up his agitation for Biafra, while stating that he would not settle for anything less.

May 15, 2017: Kanu asserted that he doesn’t intend to become President of Biafra when it is finally actualized.

Kanu said he prefers operating from the background.

May 28, 2017: A confident Kanu stated that “Biafra will be achieved in a couple of months”, while addressing addressing worshippers at the Jew Shabbat rally in a video released online.

May 30, 2017: Kanu granted an interview to Al-Jazeera to commemorate the 50th year of Biafra – his first since he was released from prison.

He berated the court for asking him not to speak with the media or associate with people.

May 31, 2017: Kanu, through the media and publicity secretary of IPOB congratulated pro-Biafran agitators on the success of the sit-at-home protest.

June 3, 2017: In another interview with AFP, Kanu said without Biafra there will be “difference between an animal and a black person.”

He vowed to restore Biafra “by whatever means possible.”

June 21, 2017: Kanu threatened that eligible voters will not exercise their rights in the 2019 Anambra governorship election if  a referendum is not held.

June 23, 2017: Kanu, again, threatened that the whole South East will not vote for any candidate for any position if Biafra is not granted.

June 23, 2017: The IPOB leader said Bayelsa is part of Igboland. 

He said one of the Niger Delta region founding leaders, Late Ken Saro-Wiwa supported the cause of Biafra, making it a Biafran state.

June 26, 2017: Kanu attacked former President Goodluck Jonathan, describing him as “a weak and incompetent leader.”

Kanu said his wife, Patience Jonathan would have done better as President.

The secessionist leader also stated that he doesn’t hate the north as it was widely believed.

June 28, 2017: A mammoth crowd of pro-biafrans gathered in front of the house of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu in Abia State.

July 2, 2017: A pro-Biafran, one Chukwudi Leo in a Facebook post, compared the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu to Jesus Christ.

He suggested that Jesus is but fictional while Kanu is real.

July 3, 2017: Kanu said the government was trying to turn his supporters against him because they know he is the right person to lead them.

He also came for National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu for bowing out of the call for a national sovereign conference which he once championed during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

July 6, 2017: Kanu said all the South-East and South-South states are part of Biafra except Edo State.

He also ruled out any attempt to go to war if the government refuses to accept a referendum.

In a separate video, Kanu said former President Olusegun Obasanjo would die for stating that the agitation for Biafra led by him has to be stopped.

July 7, 2017: Kanu was received by thousands of Biafran supporters chanting “No election in Anambra” in Anambra state.
