The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will limit its presidency to three 4-year terms taking effect from the 2017 elections.
The football confirmed the new development on Monday.
Before now, there has been no limit to the term of the President, with Issa Hayatou of Cameroon holding the position since 1988.
Hayatou has not indicated interest in the 2017 election, though he still remains the longest serving president of the football body.
