These are the top ten stories that drove conversation this week.

The verification exercise for the recall of Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi west) witnessed a low turnout.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced that the exercise would take place in 560 polling units across the senatorial district.

But there was voter apathy in many polling units.

An INEC official in-charge of Kogi, Kwara and Nasarawa, Mohammed Haruna, afterwards said they cannot be held responsible for the poor turnout of petitioners in the verification of signatures for the recall of the Senator.

In reaction, the Governor of Kogi, Yahaya Bello said that his political future would not be undermined by the victory of his political rival, Melaye.

The governor is not in any way connected to the exercise,” Petra Onyegbule, a spokesperson for the governor, said, according to Premium Times. “That it is going to affect the governor’s political future is a very myopic thinking.”

Meanwhile, the Chairman of INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, has revealed that the commission spent only N100 million on the failed recall process of the Senator.

Yakubu was reacting to claims that the commission spent over N5 billion in the process.

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo called on members of the Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM) to be prepared to take over power in 2019, stressing that they should propagate the need for all qualified electorates to obtain their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) ahead of the poll.

Obasanjo made this known at the inauguration of the Oyo Chapter of the movement, held at Trans Amusement Park, Ibadan.

Everybody must be determined to rescue Nigeria, it may not be easy, however, the God who performed wonders sometime ago, will again perform wonders. We have (seen), in this country, where five political parties endorsed a single person and God was laughing and knew what he would do. If we are leaving everything to God, we must do our best. Get your PVCs and encourage others.”

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said one of the reasons he parted ways with his former party, the All Progressive Congress (APC), was the inability of President Muhammadu Buhari to address the negative manner in which the party was being run.

Abubakar stated in an interview with BBC Hausa ‘Good Morning’ programme.

After 2015 general election, I met the president. I told him the activities of the party have been crippled and there is a need for restructure. Also, I advised the president on issues concerning his administration. I said to him, if things continued like this, I will quit but Mr Buhari turned deaf ears and remained mum,” he said.

The Nigerian Police confirmed the re-arrest of Senator Dino Melaye, after his arraignment and subsequent bail at a Wuse Zone 2 Chief Magistrate’s Court in Abuja, on Wednesday.

In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations officer, Jimoh Moshood, the police said Melaye was arraigned at the Magistrate Court for alleged criminal conspiracy, causing damage to government property, attempted suicide and escape from lawful custody.

Subsequently, he was taken to Kogi and a Magistrate Court denied him bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Suleiman Abdulahi, who ruled that the senator remain in custody for the next 39 days, adjourned the case to June 11, 2018.

The senator was brought before the court on a stretcher, arriving in a police ambulance.

Afterwards, the Kogi State High Court ruled that Melaye be moved to Abuja where he would be able to receive appropriate care for his health complications.

While deciding on an urgent fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Melaye’s lawyers on Friday, Nasir Ajanah, the state chief judge, ordered the transfer of the senator to the National Hospital, Abuja, pending the determination of his bail conditions.

The court proceeding is part of the preliminary activities in the ongoing criminal charges brought against Melaye by the police. The senator is accused of arming and financing criminal elements in Kogi, some of whom have allegedly confessed their affiliation to Melaye after they were taken into custody earlier this year.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has lashed out at President Buhari for his “mediocre” performance during his latest trip to the United States.

Obasanjo said President Buhari missed another opportunity to display his mettle as a thoroughbred leader and instead undermined Nigeria’s interest in at least three segments of national development.

The former president said this while responding to a news report claiming he had made a U-turn and now supports President Buhari for a second term.

While debunking the news in a Wednesday afternoon statement issued by Kehinde Adeyemi, his official spokesperson in Abeokuta, Obasanjo said Buhari’s performance further highlighted his “mediocrity” and distanced himself from those singing the praises of the president over it.

Obasanjo said he stood by his January 23 statement in which he strongly condemned Buhari for his poor handling of national issues, unchecked killings of citizens and warned him not to run for second term.

A presidential spokesperson explained reasons President Buhari stopped over London when he was supposed to have returned to Nigeria from the US.

Garba Shehu said the president had to stop over in London on his way back from the United States for technical reasons.

Shehu said the president’s main aircraft was under repairs and he had to use a smaller jet.

The big jet is under repair. It has been taken for major repairs. So the president is using a small plane and there is a limit to the distance the small plane can cover,” he said in response to inquiries by State House correspondents.

Shehu also said the “technical stopover I talked about is that the journey from U.S. to Abuja is broken into two.

Technical stopover is that the plane stops at a point, refuel, do some checks and then proceed on the journey,” he said.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has said that the federal government will continue to make more arrest of suspected looters of the national treasury and put them on trial despite the difficulty in putting them behind bars.

He also said corruption was fighting back as represented in the desperation by some “corrupt politicians” to ensure that President Buhari was pushed out of power.

Osinbajo spoke in Akure on Thursday while launching the National Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises(MSME) in the state.

We will continue to put them on trial even if they are not thrown into jail yet,” the vice president said.
