The federal government’s Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) is in the news again – and, thankfully this time, it is not about missing monies.

SURE-P has now budgeted N15 billion to pay allowances of unemployed graduates participating in its Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS). according to the GIS head who said this to newsmen today in Minna.

According to Premium Times, “Mr Adegbe said each of the 50,000 participants to be recruited for the internship programme would earn N25, 000 monthly.”

He said the scheme was aimed at providing participants with requisite experience in various disciplines preparatory to securing jobs.

Mr Adegbe said the graduates would be placed in firms and organisations, non-governmental organisations and selected government agencies on a one-year internship.

“The interns are expected to acquire professional skills, training and work experience to improve their job-placement opportunities.”

“The Federal Government will be responsible for paying monthly stipends to them, while participating institutions will be expected to provide adequate opportunities for training and mentoring,” he said.

Mr Adegbe said that the scheme would enhance chances of the 50,000 unemployed graduates through improvement on their skills during the internship programmes.

He urged the graduates to ensure that they registered for the scheme.

The management of SURE-P funds, drawn from savings from government spending on petrol subsidy, has been hit by controversy and allegation of mismanagement.

The government promised to use the funds to address unemployment and infrastructure.

Just this week, the Senate had accused the government of being unable to account for N500 billion.
