Do you know who I am?
In Nigeria, asking that question is often interpreted as ‘do you know how powerful, famous, and influential I am?’
That is precisely the mistake. It’s not about who society thinks I am or what I have.
Who I am is the essence of humanity. It is the connection of individual spirit. It is the eternalness of my being. My essential spirit does not deserve disrespect. It does not deserve disregard. It does not deserve disdain.
That is what I mean when I say ‘do you know who I am’.
I am a child of God. I am a child of the universe. I am worthy of love, of respect, of goodwill, and regard – all of the regard that the world has to offer even if I’m a nineteen-year-old who just finished university, who is overweight with bad teeth and is squatting with my friend.
Even if that is you, do you know who you are?
You are a child of God. You deserve to be here. You deserve respect and love. Nobody deserves to treat you as if you don’t matter, because if you don’t know who you are, then other people will call you a name that is not yours.
