If anyone regrets being listed on Wikipedia, it’s probably Eniola Badmus. The website has caused her so much trauma. And over what? Her Age.
The award winning plus-size Nollywood actress turned a year older on Thursday, and in celebration, took to the gram to share some bodacious birthday pics.
Sadly, things went sour when some unsuspecting media outlets – which were confident in their quick Wikipedia fact check announced boldly in their headlines that Eniola had hit the big 40, when she is, as she says, in fact, 34.
While we could debate about the fact-checking skills of the news media, some of the blame could be laid at the feet of the massive online encyclopedia, Wikipedia.
Wikipedia clearly states that the ‘Gbobo Bigz Girls’ star was born on the 7th of September 1977, making her 40-years-old. However, she clarified in an interview with Encomium that she is 34.
“I am 34 today. I thank God for all He has done in my life,” she said.
It turns, this is not the first time she would be clarifying her age to the media due to a wrong date of birth on Wikipedia. Last year, a similar scenario occurred and she had to go on Snapchat to correct the mistake, saying she was 33-years-old and not 39 as reported.
Popular actress Funke Akindele also had to correct her age last year, as her Wikipedia page said she was 40, while Akindele said she was 39. As at the time of writing this, no correction has been made to her page yet.
Artists should also make an attempt to update their Wikipedia pages to reflect their appropriate age. This will help stop the confusion faced by the media and fans anytime their birthdays are around the corner.
