A tragic shooting at the Bronx Lebanon hospital in New York on Friday left one person dead and six others severely wounded.

The gunman has been identified as Henry Bello, a former employee of the hospital who resigned after he was accused of sexually harassing a female colleague in 2015. Nigerian-born Dr. Bello walked into the hospital on Friday wearing a lab coat under which he hid an AR-15 rifle and opened fire on the doctors, medical students and patients.

Mirror reports that Bello killed a female doctor on the 16th floor of the hospital then moved on to the 17th people where he injured the other victims and attempted to set himself and the building on fire. The site adds that, “It activated the sprinklers which extinguished the blaze. He then turned the gun on himself.”

Henry Bello is originally from Nigeria and was listed on the website of Bronx Lebanon hospital as a family physician but records show his medical licence as suspended and his medical permit to practice as an international medical graduate as expired.

Henry Bello has a history of attacking women and had been arrested by the police many times for several offences. In 2004, he was arrested and charged for felony abuse in Manhattan after an incident in which he “grabbed a 23-year-old woman’s crotch, held her arms, lifted her up and carried her off, saying, ‘You’re coming with me.”, according to Heavy.com. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanour charge of unlawful imprisonment and was sentenced to carry out community service.

In a related case, Henry Bello was arrested in 2009 after “two women accused of him of trying to look up their skirts with a mirror”, according to Huffington Post‘s reports. At this time, he was charged for “unlawful surveillance”.

He had other troubles including a listing as a respondent in a California divorce in 2002 and was also arrested for “fare evasion on the New York subway system”.

After Bello’s job with Bronx Lebanon hospital was terminated in 2015, he promised to return to kill the female employee he had harassed. That employee had the day off so he unleashed his terror on other people who were present at the hospital.

45-year-old Henry Bello killed himself in the attack.
