The Christian Association of Nigeria, the umbrella body under which all Christian denominations in the country are represented has been at the forefront advocating for religious freedom of all its citizenry and safeguarding against forced indoctrination. Recently it has raised accusations against the Buhari Presidency, suggesting there is a secret plot to forcefully islamize the nation. The first accusation from CAN to the Government was a result of his earliest appointments which were greatly favoured towards Muslims in the country. The government denied the claims.
When we thought the dust had settled there was another accusation of islamisation which emerged after an enlarged meeting of CAN in Lagos which was attended by its Bigwigs including Pastor E.A Adeboye, Bishop Oyedepo, Bishop Mike Okonkwo among other Christian leaders that rarely make comment on national discourse.
This time around they all voiced the same islamisation accusation against the Presidency as it relates to the issue of removal of CRS from the country’s curriculum. This accusation went back and forth until the National Assembly intervened and the alleged removal was stopped.
But this hasn’t eased the concerns of CAN from re-echoing the islamisation allegations against the country. Last week at Shepherd Hill Baptist Church Obanikoro Lagos, another expanded meeting of CAN was held which had the presence of the earlier stated bigwigs. The communique which the country’s religious leaders decided on, was a renewed resolve to resist forced islamisation and an decision to advise the Government to withdraw Nigeria from all Islamic international organisations especially the OIC (Organisation of Islamic Countries).
This same request was made few days after when CAN met the President at the villa in Abuja.
Often times when this allegation of islamisation is raised it is always met with divided opinions from Nigerians, however government itself is not helping matters in its dealings as it keeps making the accusation a truthful one.
The recently reported stoppage of admission of female regular combatant into the Nigerian Army due to Pressure mounted by Powerful Islamic leaders which is still controversial due to the stance of the defence headquarters on the story is a direct assault on non Muslims in the country.
It is on record that only one of those previously admitted was a Muslim with others being Christians from the South and other Middle Belt countries.
This decision once again has gave a credence to the islamisation accusation of CAN against President Buhari, despite the fact that total islamisation of a Nation like Nigeria is impossible.
Implementation of decisions that works against the faith of others in the country is Unacceptable.
