[The Injustice Blog] Unimaid Lecturers: no end in sight?

Unimaid

115 days after they were kidnapped by the Boko-Haram sect in an ambush that claimed the lives of many, the freedom of four kidnapped staffs of the University of Maiduguri (UniMaid) is still a question begging for answers and is yet to get any reply from those that sent them on the assignment.

Just like we engaged in a lot of dilly dallying as we’ve done to the chibok girls, we’ve started the same approach to these individuals kidnapped for no fault of theirs.

On the 25th of July 2017 while carrying out a national assignment which involved the search for hydrocarbon (oil) in the Chad Basin of Borno State, these four persons Dr. Yusuf Solomon, a senior lecturer at the geology department of UNIMAID, Ibrahim Yusuf a lecturer in the same department, Haruna Dosho a driver and another person were abducted in a bloody ambush by the Boko Haram sect. 115 days after, they are yet to smell the air of freedom.

The federal government once again has failed these individuals. They’ve been exposed to the pains and psychological disorders of being a captive. Government has not made their issue a National priority as a result it has failed to make the news and as we are in this part of the world, we have “moved on” and acted as if nothing happened and we’ve “leave it for God” but as senior lawyer Femi Falana SAN said recently we wont leave this for God.

It needs the intervention of man to rights the wrongs of their abduction. In an emotional letter written by one of the abductees Dr. Yusuf Solomon he gave a detailed description of their situation and why their freedom must not be delayed. That letter received no reply or reaction from the federal government.

The last time the issue was mentioned was when the Vice President as Acting President went to commission a rice mill in kebbi state. His promise that the lecturers will be released soon is yet to come to pass.

115 days after, Nigeria once again is towing the path of failure due to its inability to secure the freedom of these individuals. One day in captivity for these four Unimaid lecturers is a day too long, 115 days in Boko-Haram captivity is unconscionable.
