Is Bill Cosby the goal for Evans’ lawyers?

by Alexander O. Onukwue

Just in case you need a reminder, Bill Cosby is the American comedian and actor whose trial on the charge of non-consensual sexual assault resulted in a mistrial.

Cosby was a long-standing darling of American TV for more than half a century, but always had skeletons in his cupboard with his sexual desires. About 60 women came forward to accuse him of different forms of improper conduct, but only the case filed by Andrea Constand made it to trial.

The facts of the case against Cosby included admission by the actor, to giving certain substances to the women he had wanted to bed. Those substances are blacklisted drugs in the United States which, when consumed, left the “victims” in a less resistant state.

Cosby has not been found guilty for rape and assault. He is now on a tour, giving classes on how to handle cases of sexual assault.

The Evans case is very different. It is hard to rank the evils involved in both cases as both involve significant levels of injury and disorientation to individuals and families. Evans is a kidnapper who has reaped fortunes from keeping people away from their families, killing them afterwards in some cases. He has practically made a life of reaping from the sorrows of others, in which case, we might even say he is the evil one here.

But legal procedures can always surprise us, and it is not unconscionable that, in beefing him up about his chances of walking free, Evans’ lawyers may have given him an oyibo example. It is always easier when you want to sell something to a Nigerian to invoke a foreign example, and no better case relates to Evans at the moment than the mistrial of Bill Cosby’s case.

Many Americans were frustrated with that outcome. It is early days in Evans case, but what will the Nigerian feeling be at the end of the day?
