Nigerian News & Entertainment channel, BattaBox takes the debate surrounding the alleged ban of the hijab in Lagos primary schools by Governor Babatunde Fashola to the street of Lagos.

YNaija investigated the decision on Hijab ban which the Lagos state commissioner described as mare “speculation,” but it has not stopped the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit, protesting against it.

In many social circles online, electronic and print media, the debate has continued and now through this vox-pop, we get to hear the views on the issue from a lay man’s point of view.

“It’s not good like that sha – it’s not proper for a lady to open her hair and its somehow affecting their life – because they are not really concentrating,” says one young girl wearing her hijab to school.

“A school is a place to learn – religion should be kept aside,” says one man.

“It is not right to ban the hijab as it is deteriorating their own belief in their religion,” says another man.

“The hijab should be allowed in Muslim schools, but not public schools.”

  1. By saying the Hijab be banned in public school would mean the law does not recognize Islam. The use of the Hijab is fundamental to Muslim girl and Islam. If Christianity does not recognize the Hijab or headscarf and are not being forced to use it,it means their right has been granted.Since Islam recognized the Hijab and want to use it and are being denied it,it means their right is being denied! But how does the use of the Hijab by Muslim girl affect(negatively) the performance of a non-Muslim teacher in public School? How does it also affect(negatively) the contribution of the State Government towards the development of the educational sector?
