Although Hausa movies and series aren’t really my thing, I can see what Linda Ikeji is doing and I think it’s commendable. The media mogul has dedicated herself to her newly launched streaming platform in the past year, scoring 10,000 paid subscribers in the first three days and positioning LiTV as a player in the streaming landscape.
Given that subscribers and prospective ones aren’t bound by a monolithic taste, LiTV is introducing Kannywood to its burgeoning content. Kannywood is the subset of Nollywood where movies and television series are made in Hausa and, trust me, this microclimate within local pop culture has its dedicated audience (Africa Magic Hausa, case in point).
LiTV hasn’t broken its affinity towards making reality shows; the platform recently asked “Do you want to be a reality star?” on its Instagram, meaning we can expect more content in the fashion of Oyinbo Wives of Lagos and King Tonto. Seemingly, Kannywood is the first wave of niched, indigenous content for LiTV and who says Igbo and Yoruba movies and series can’t follow?
