OAU shut down over tuition protest

Following violent demonstrations at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, the administration this evening announced an indefinite shutdown of the institution and ordered students to vacate its premises by Thursday afternoon.

A statement signed by D. O. Awoyemi, Registrar and Secretary to the university council cited “persistent disruption of normal activities and peace on campus as a result of violent demonstrations by students, led by the Student Union Executive,” as the rationale for the decision. Read more….

486 suspects arrested in Abia are travellers 

The Coordinator, National Information Centre, Mike Omeri, said on Wednesday that the 486 people arrested by security operatives on Sunday, in Abia, were travellers.

Omeri disclosed this at a joint news conference organised by the centre in Abuja.

The coordinator said the arrest of the travellers was not targeted at any group of persons or individual, but done in view of the general security situation in the country.

He said when the suspects were interrogated, one of them, who had been on the watch list of the Department of State Security Services (DSS) since 2007, was identified. Read more….

Adamawa lawmakers explain why Nyako, deputy should be impeached

The Adamawa State House of Assembly, which, Wednesday, served the duo of Governor Murtala Nyako and Deputy Governor Bala Ngilari with impeachment notices, is accusing the duo of gross misconduct.

The State Assembly said the executives fraudulently diverted N10 billon of workers’ salaries for September and October, 2011; N120 million of Adamawa state workers’ emolument for May, 2014; N1.7 billion for Special Assistants; and N8 billion for fictitious contract.

The impeachment notice, signed by 19 of the 25 state lawmakers, listed 20 impeachable offenses against Messrs. Nyako and Ngilari. Read more….

Why we dropped Nigeria’s N100 billion stolen funds suit against Abacha – Counsel

The Federal Government on Wednesday withdrew the corruption charges filed against Mohammed Abacha, son of former dictator, Sani Abacha.

The government’s lawyer also told the court that he was asked to withdraw the suit by the Nigeria’s Attorney General, Mohammed Adoke.

The government had accused Mohammed of receiving stolen property worth N100.38 billion. The money is believed to have been stolen by the late dictator when he was the Nigerian head of state from 1993 to 1998. Read more….

‘Boko Haram plans to bomb Abuja with petrol tankers’ – DSS

The Department of State Security Services on Wednesday said the Boko Haram sect has devised plans to bomb the nation’s capital with petrol tankers.

The DSS said the information was obtained through intelligence reports on the sect’s activities.

According to the agency, the sect will seize petrol tankers at gunpoint and fill it with improvised devices and that will be used to bomb the FCT within the next few days. Read more….

Jonathan mourns Arisekola-Alao

President Goodluck Jonathan has mourned the death of the renowned Nigerian businessman and religious leader,  Abdul-Azeez Arisekola-Alao.

In a condolence message issued by Reuben Abati Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, President Jonathan urged his family, relatives, friends, associates and dependants to be comforted by the fact that Alhaji Arisekola-Alao lived a very fulfilled life.

In passing on, President Jonathan said Alhaji Arisekola-Alao leaves behind a legacy of significant and commendable achievements. Read more….

FG fails to arraign Ekiti commissioner, 11 others

The Federal Government on Wednesday failed to produce in court, a serving Commissioner in Ekiti State, Funminiyi Afuye and 11 others charged with terrorism by the police.

Although the government was not represented when the case came up before Evoh Chukwu, a Justice of the Federal High Court, Abuja, it has however indicated its intention to withdraw the three-count charge filed on Monday.

The government was expected to arraign the 12 accused persons based on the three-count charge. Read more….
