P-Square: The Fight That Shook The Entertainment Industry

Paul and Peter Okoye, popularly known as “P-Square”, came into the music industry in 2003, gathering millions of Nigerians and Africans as fans of their energetic and sonorous songs. The twins took the whole continent by storm, performing in regions and countries that other artists in their time could only dream of.

The duo is composed of talented songwriters, dancers, and vocalists, evident in many of their performances, songs, and music videos.

However, despite ruling the Nigerian music industry, the brothers always seemed to be at odds with each other, and there was no regular drama between them as it always escalated due to their status in the entertainment industry.

2005: The first of many fights between the brothers

Their fights began to take traction in 2015 when the twins started having differing opinions concerning their management and financial decisions. This also unearthed several bottled-up issues which they both had against each other. 2015 began what would soon become one of the longest and most toxic feuds between Nigerian celebrities.

2016: Rumours of P-Square split surfaces

In 2016, rumours began surfacing the internet, speculating that the uber-talented duo were going their separate ways and no longer continuing their music band as their fights only got worse with no route to settling or forgiving one another.

To make matters worse, the twins, Paul and Peter Okoye, had their brother and manager, Jude Okoye, come in between them as he picked sides, further fuelling the flames of the fight by choosing to support Paul Okoye.

2017: P-Square goes on a violent hiatus

Although there were rumours that the twins would go their separate ways in 2016, it wasn’t until 2017 that Paul and Peter officially announced that they could no longer continue the façade that they had been keeping up.

The two were seen exchanging punches in September 2017, but not before exchanging flowery insults on social media platforms. The P-Square split was shocking news to the country as the duo sold their joint house and had many hits to their names, and Nigerians wondered if they would ever reconcile.

After splitting up, Paul and Peter Okoye began their solo careers, not saying goodbye to fame and music life; they each went by “Rudeboy” and “Mr P” as new stage names.

2018: Healing the rift between brothers

Though the twin brothers had their differences, some occasions demanded both their appearances in the media and there, they would have to accommodate each other’s personalities whether performing together or graving an event, but this was not enough to go by as proof that Paul and Peter were going to get back together. They remained at odds with each other and only smiled for the camera but never at each other.

2021-2023: A step towards forgiveness

After being apart for four years, the brothers slowly began to move together, indicating that they were working towards their issues and looking forward to embracing one another.

The internet was agog for this as the siblings, though successful in their solo careers, were preferred together as a band, as the “P-Square”, which many grew to love.

The two released a song titled “Jaiye” under their alias “P-Square”, confirming that they were returning or on their way to returning to their previous selves.

By 2023, the duo were back to being bubbly and a happy family. Though they had their thriving solo careers, they still sang together as “P-Square”. They were actively trying to reconcile with each other and build back their strained relationship for themselves, their families and their fans.

2024: The horror returns to stay

2024 has been a rollercoaster for the siblings as their relationship is tested and tried again. The duo begins throwing jabs at each other, hinting they might be breaking up again.

Paul Okoye went on an interview in August to confirm that he and his brother were no longer carrying on the “P-Square” torch that the world loved as they had too many differences that could not be ignored or swept under the rug.

According to Paul Okoye, his brother had informed him physically that he wanted no part in their two-person band anymore and did not want to make a public announcement to show that he was the “bad egg” among the both of them. Paul said he had no choice but to revive his solo career and continue sharing his voice as an artist. He also claimed that Peter had done the unthinkable by petitioning him (Paul) and Jude Okoye to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for questioning.

However, Peter Okoye comes out with his open letter to clear the air about their relationship and the lies his twin has told the media in his painting of him in a bad light before the public.

Peter Okoye said he was in no competition with his twin; however, Paul had somewhat made it his life mission to humiliate him on the internet by conducting several interviews.

Peter stated that Paul had discredited him as a songwriter, taking credit for 99% of their songwriting during their days together. He said he had consistently recognised both of them, but Paul referred to himself alone whenever he spoke about “P-Square”.

“My brother, neither of us is the most talented artist in the world, but you fail to understand that God gave us this talent and even granted us another chance to excel after our last breakup. Instead, you chose to turn the most awarded and decorated music group in Africa into a laughingstock again,” Peter wrote.

Peter blamed Jude for coming between him and Paul, saying that Paul had never missed an opportunity to humiliate him with Jude by his side.

“You have disrespected my wife, disrespected my family, disrespected my talent, disrespected my ideas, and even sided with Jude when he was clearly trying to oppress me. Now, it feels like you have taken it even further by trying so hard to turn the fans against me by making them believe I’m jealous of you,” Peter said in his open letter.

Peter revealed that he never petitioned the EFCC against Jude and Paul, but rather, the three of them owned a management company called “Northside Entertainment”, but there had been a secret agency called “Northside Music”, which was owned by Jude and Ifeoma Okoye. This baffled the singer when he discovered that millions of naira and dollars were being syphoned by “Northside Music” from “Northside Entertainment”, leading to the involvement of the anti-graft agency.
