Senator Kamala Harris, James Comey | Here are the winners and losers from Jeff Sessions’ testimony

US Attorney General, Jeff Sessions sat before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday to testify about his recusal from investigations into possible ties between President Trump’s campaign and Russia. He was also to answer questions on roles he might have played in the firing of former FBI Director, James Comey who testified before the Senate last week.

Before you get super excited about the possibilities of further clarity into these American issues because Sessions might have said something, we’re glad to let you know that Attorney General Jefferson Beauregard Sessions (why’s his middle name “beauregard” though) said nothing particularly new or helpful. This post does justice to that!

From the two and a half hours testimony at the Hart Senate Office Building yesterday, here are the winners and losers:

WINNERS

Senator Kamala Harris

Being a black woman in a white-male dominated US Congress is tough but Senator Harris continues to be a star. At yesterday’s testimony, she was interrupted by Senator John McCain while she questioned Sessions on a Department of Justice policy. McCain said to Richard Burr: “Chairman, the witness should be allowed to answer the question” and Burr replied to him, “Senators will allow the chairs to control the hearing” then to Harris, “Senator Harris, let him answer”.

Apparently, it’s not the first time the senator has been barged in on by both men – a situation the internet now refers to as “manterruption”. What the “manterrupters” have done for Harris is put her in the spotlight and the attention she has gotten so far is a boost for her career.

James Comey

At Comey’s hearing last week, he revealed that Jeff Sessions “lingered” when President Trump asked that he and Comey be left alone in the Oval Office for a private meeting where the president said, “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.” Sessions yesterday confirmed that episode and further admitted that Comey met with him to express concern about the meeting.

More importantly, Sessions revealed nothing to discredit Comey or undermine his testimony.

LOSERS

Jeff Sessions

His testimony left many questions unanswered and raised new ones.

Most of Sessions’ answers to questions on his conversations with President Trump about the Russia investigation read along the lines, “I’m not able to discuss with you, to confirm or deny, the nature of private conversations I had with the president”. For many other questions including whether he had a third meeting with Russian officials, Sessions either couldn’t “recall” or “didn’t know”. Ass-licker much?

Senator Martin Heinrich of New Mexico was led to accuse Sessions of “obstructing” the investigation by avoiding questions.

Trump’s administration

After Sessions’ testimony, we doubt Trump will find an answer to this question anytime soon.
