Senior democrat asks key question : Why does Kushner still have a security clearance?

Top Democrat Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, has demanded an explanation from the White House for why senior adviser Jared Kushner still has a security clearance despite reports that he failed to disclose he had meetings with Russian officials and businessmen, Politico reports.

Cummings letter was signed by all the Democrats on his committee and sent to the White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus requesting documents with a deadline for July 5, including Kushner’s security clearance application and complete records of his contacts with Russians.

Kushner, son-in-law to President Trump and Senior adviser, on his security clearance application omitted dozens of contacts with foreign leaders. Washington Post also reported last month that the Russian ambassador to the United States told his superiors Kushner meant to set up a secret communications backchannel between the 2016 Trump transition team and Russia.

In the letter, the Maryland Democrat wrote “It is unclear why Mr. Kushner continues to have access to classified information while these allegations are being investigated”. It also questions why former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn wasn’t suspended by the White House after information from former acting Attorney General Sally Yates stated that he might be susceptible to Russian blackmail.

Cummings wrote, “Although the White House received credible allegations of obvious security concern relating to General Flynn from the Acting Attorney General, it appears that the White House did not suspend his security clearance while those allegations were reviewed ”.
