According to the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, the budgetary allocations of the Nigeria Police can barely buy stationery (writing materials) for the entire Force.
On Thursday, Arase revealed to the House of Representatives Committee on Police Affairs that the money released to the Force keeps declining on yearly basis.
The IG of Police also urged the committee to do everything within its powers to increase the budget of the police in the 2016 budget, so as to improve on facilities and equipment.
“The money that is released to the police cannot even buy stationery for all the police formations in the country,”
Breaking it down for the lawmakers, Arase said that in 2010, the police made a recurrent proposal of N45bn, but only got N16bn.
The situation repeated itself in 2013, when a proposal of N56bn was made but the budget office released N7bn.
Arase said the situation became worse in 2015 was worse, when the Force made a budget proposal of N71bn but only received N5bn.
“We are now left with a combined capital liabilities of about N54bn. These are part of the funding challenges that we are currently confronted with, Mr. Chairman.”
