FG warns Nigerians in flood-prone areas to relocate amid rising death toll

The federal government has urged residents in flood-prone areas to move to higher grounds as severe flooding is expected to threaten lives and properties in several parts of the country this year.
Areas identified for urgent caution include Lekki, Ikorodu, Ajegunle, and Isheri (OPIC area), which are predicted to experience flash floods. Authorities have asked residents to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.
According to data from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), floods have already claimed 191 lives across 20 states in 2025, highlighting the growing urgency of the situation.
First Lady donates ₦1 billion, relief items to victims in Niger State

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has donated ₦1 billion alongside 2,000 bags of rice, clothing, shoes, and other relief materials to support victims of natural disasters and insecurity in Niger State.
The donation was made through her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) and targeted people affected by floods, banditry, boat accidents, and fire incidents across the state.
Presenting the items at the Government House in Minna, Mrs. Tinubu was welcomed by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago and members of the State Executive Council.
Terror leader Bello Turji releases 32 hostages, surrenders weapons after peace talks

Bello Turji, a feared terror leader in north-west Nigeria, has reportedly released 32 kidnapped victims and surrendered some of his weapons.
According to Islamic cleric Musa Yusuf, also known as Asadus-Sunnah, the development came after a series of peace talks in July with Turji and other fighters in the Fakai forest, Shinkafi LGA of Zamfara State.
Yusuf said the dialogue was initiated by Shinkafi residents who urged clerics to step in and convince Turji to stop attacks and allow farmers to return to their lands.
NCAA suspends two ValueJet pilots for reckless safety breach at Abuja airport

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has suspended two pilots from ValueJet for a serious breach of safety protocols at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
In a statement released by Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, the incident occurred on Friday, August 5, 2025, at the domestic terminal. The pilots reportedly began flight departure from the designated bay without completing the mandatory pre-departure clearance.
The NCAA condemned the act as “reckless,” stating it endangered the lives of airport ground staff and other facility users.
Yobe students win global English championship, receive ₦1.5m and laptops

Development advocate, Kashim Tumsah, has awarded a ₦1.5 million cash prize and brand-new laptops to three Yobe students who emerged champions at the 2025 TeenEagle Global English Championship held in London.
The winners, Nafisa Abdullahi (17), Ruqayya Fema (15), and Hadiza Kalli, students of Nigeria Tulip International College, Mamudo, outperformed 20,000 participants from 69 countries in debate, English skills, and talent presentation.
Tumsah, a lawyer and diplomat, praised the girls’ achievement in Damaturu on Tuesday, noting each student will receive ₦500,000 and a laptop as a reward for their creativity, brilliance, and for making Nigeria proud on the global stage.
