Tunji Braithwaite, a former presidential candidate of the Nigerian Advance Party, NAP, has died at the age of 82.
The famous lawyer/politician and human rights activist is regarded as one of the champions of Nigeria’s democracy.
Braithwaite was said to have passed away in Lagos on Monday, after a brief illness.
Following the passing, President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with the family of the late activist.
In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, the President said the death of Braithwaite came at a time that his wisdom, intellectual depth, vast knowledge and experience were needed by the country.
The President recalled the immeasurable contributions of the late sage to the development of democracy, rule of law and human rights in Nigeria.
Buhari assured Braithwaite’s family and friends that the political history of the country would be incomplete without talking about his contribution.
He also urged political leaders to emulate the virtues of the founder of the Nigerian Advance Party (NAP) during the Second Republic, who perceived politics as a platform for honest service to the nation rather than an opportunity to make money.
The President added that the elder statesman was quintessentially selfless, patriotic and committed to national development.
