We can’t delete Trump’s tweet, Twitter declares

Following calls proposing that Twitter should delete President Trump’s weekend tweet about North Korea which many including North Korea’s foreign minister Ri Yong believes incites violence and is a declaration of war, the social media company has given its reasons for not yielding to the calls.

• The controversial tweet

On Saturday, Trump in a tweet, wrote, “Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at U.N. If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won’t be around much longer!”

• Twitter’s response

Twitter through a statement said Trump’s tweet is newsworthy and of public interest hence, it didn’t meet the conditions to be removed.

The statement reads, “Some of you have been asking why we haven’t taken down the Tweet mentioned here, “we hold all accounts to the same Rules, and consider a number of factors when assessing whether Tweets violate our Rules. Among the considerations is “newsworthiness” and whether a Tweet is of public interest. This has long been internal policy and we’ll soon update our public-facing rules to reflect it. We need to do better on this, and will.”

“Twitter is committed to transparency and keeping people informed about what’s happening in the world. We’ll continue to be guided by these fundamental principles,” the statement added.
