Gunmen suspected to be members of the militant Islamic sect Boko Haram in the early hours of today attacked students of the Federal Government College, Buni-Yadi, Yobe State, killing about forty three.
The men were said to have attacked the students in their hostels while they were asleep. Reports say the students were hacked down using machetes.

Several building in the school premises were also burnt to the ground in an attack which comes a day after President Goodluck Jonathan assured citizens in a presidential media chat of the efforts of Nigerian military forces to contain the violent crisis.
A senior medical source at the Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital in Yobe’s capital Damaturu said the gunmen only targeted male students and that female students were “spared”.
“So far, 43 bodies have been brought (from the college) and are lying at the morgue,” said the source, who requested anonymity as he was not authorised to discuss death tolls.
The Federal Government College Buni Yadi is a co-educational institution located some 55 km south of Damaturu the Yobe State capital. This is the fourth attack on secondary schools since the inception of the sect members.
