We understand Toke Makinwa’s advice but it’s wrong, wrong, wrong!

Toke Makinwa YNaija

Come let us reason together!

Why is Toke Makinwa trending on Twitter for a video she put up on her vlog in July? Why is TwitterNG bashing the woman for sharing her opinion about youthful lifestyle? Her own opinion o. Not a guide to a generally acceptable way of life. And on what platform? Her vlog. So it’s not for you if you do not fancy her personality but we need to talk about it still.

Toke Makinwa is a unique brand, she has her fans and they are loyal, it’s not surprising. Young people naturally gravitate towards celebrities who shoot up the ladder with such speed as Toke’s. On top of that, she makes conspicuous fashion statements everywhere she goes. Then, she pulls off the spiritual game nicely on her Instagram, what with her religious nuggets.

A complete package is what Toke is, hence role model for young, highly impressionable girls.

First, let’s look at the video that got everyone talking:

The summary of Toke’s message is to have fun while you can. We get it! But her choice of words, her line of advice is wrong, wrong, wrong!

Young people in their 20s, especially in the early years, are fickle-minded. They are easily swayed by advice and opinion, particularly when they come from influential media personalities like Toke Makinwa. Someone here just asked, “What if Oprah Winfrey glamorised slutty behaviour on her talk show. Oprah back then? God knows how most of us who looked up to her would have wound up”.

This our on-screen and on-air darling is basically asking young people to go all out and destroy their formative years, because “live life”.

It is way below par for Toke to encourage 20 year olds to have one night stands and kiss strangers. The hundreds of sexual abuse reports we read on the news per day are already driving us crazy, then this woman, a supposedly right-thinking member of the elite society advises young girls to get one-night stands? Because it’s supposed to be fun? Or a fulfilment of one of the demands of being young?

Toke kissed a stranger and there was no ensuing drama, we assume. Kissing a stranger may end up with a harmful aftermath for many others. What if “stranger” is a rapist or a serial killer or an all-round mad dude who will ask for more? If you belong to the age range Toke addressed in that video and you’re reading this, you better be wise.

And by wise, we mean that you thoroughly weigh the likely consequences of heeding to Aunty Toke’s advice. For those who listen to Rhythm FM’s weekday morning show “The Morning Drive” hosted by Toke and Nanya Diali, you’d know that Toke gives us flashes of her serious side from time to time. Her vlog though, nahh! So, if your future matters to you, even slightly, then do NOT take Toke’s advice seriously. If you think we do not have work on our hands and we just decided to expend our time on this post to bash Toke; well, it’s not just us. Read the tweets below:

After all said, if you choose to go by Toke’s advice, we’ll like to hear about the consequences of your choice. You can document your experience and share with us here, since you won’t hear word.
