The majority of us, Nigerians, have believed that President Buhari actually received four Governors, one Minister and the Chairman of the APC, in the afternoon of Sunday, July 23.
One photograph of a breakfast table, and another of the five men, has gone into everyone’s hard drive, and we are pretty much okay. As much as could be judged from one photograph from a not-so-distant angle, the President appears responsive and aware. He’s ‘in high spirits’ and will be back in about a fortnight.
But Femi Fani-Kayode is not fooled.
No, he does not accept that there had been a meet in London between the APC leaders and Buhari. He thinks it was a photo-op, a cover-up by the ruling Party to keep packaging the President like he was fit and still able. In a new piece, FFK says he says he has been “reliably informed that they were taken during Ramadan in Abuja some time back and not yesterday in London”.
There is no need for an introduction into the mind of FFK and how he feels about Buhari; the words he uses are from a cook book not suitable for public consumption. But he could not be the only one who doubts the veracity of this meeting, and as with his previous comments on other matters relating to Buhari and the APC, it makes an impression on quite a number of people across the country.
To be straight, if the APC wanted to convince Nigerians about Buhari’s state, it was definitely not a convincing effort to put out just a single photo of the visit. It only helps to fuel further conspiracy theories and more suspicion, the type Femi Adesina referred to as “Fake News” a la Donald Trump.
All of the pressure on President Buhari to make his health situation public would not necessarily mandate that he reveal anything he wishes not to, at least until the constitutionally stipulated time makes it expedient for his ability to be determined. That said, the APC should do better than play on the sensibilities of Nigerians.
Unless it is their intention to give the opposition points with which to badger them.
