Bringing the dead to justice; thoughts behind the ‘Onome’ trend on Twitter

If history has taught us anything, it is that we live in a beautiful world, filled with bad things. It is even more depressing that some of these events are effectuated by people. Humanity has struggled with this problem, dating far back as the earliest records of civilization.

Humans have a habit of hurting others. Thankfully, laws and moral guidelines set by government and religion has helped the world navigate this problem. With this in place, the question left to answer now is, “To what length should justice be sought?” This is the question on the minds of some Nigerians on Twitter today as we stumbled across a thread,  filled with a superfluous request to find a way around punishing a dead person.

The backstory is that of a man who tortured and killed his wife over infidelity issues and then proceeded to kill himself, which surfaced on social media earlier today. Of course, a number of persons weighed in on the matter, discussing the damage poor mental health, violent partners, and infidelity have on society. But a lady named Onome, was adamant on the issue of getting justice for the victim.

She called for a way to punish the perpetrator but was adamant about accepting that the perpetrator of the crime she wanted to be punished was dead.

She emphasized over and over again that she wants justice, stressing that there had to be a way to get justice. Her demand shifted the conversation from the tragic story in itself, to how she proposes to punish a corpse. A lot of persons considered it a silly request and responded accordingly.

Do you think she has a point or she is probably struggling to come to terms with the news, given how tragic it is?

Should there be a way to get at criminals who escape justice by taking their own life or is their death punishment enough?
