Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who ruled Nigeria both as a military Head of State and civilian President, has been hailed as a democratic convert who should be lauded for speaking the truth.
This was said by Chukwuemeka Ezeife, a former governor of old Anambra state, in an interview with Punch Newspapers.
Ezeife said Obasanjo’s remark that the abducted Chibok girls were beyond rescue, was the truth, despite President Buhari’s claims that the kidnapped girls will be found and brought home.
Ezeife, who described President Buhari’s promise to return the girls as herculean, also stated that: “No matter what anybody thinks of Obasanjo, when he says the truth, he must be commended.”
“Now, tell me, where are the Chibok girls that we are going to release? Why should anybody keep talking about releasing the Chibok girls as a promise made during campaigns.”
“He (Buhari) was making the promise when it is obvious that they are nowhere. Some of them are the suicide bombers; some of them have been sold to other places. They are not anywhere together. There is nothing like Chibok girls somewhere that you just open a door and see them there.”
“Obasanjo should be commended for telling the truth. I don’t mind how corrupt he allegedly was and how much he allegedly ripped off Nigerians when he was president. If he has converted to speaking against corruption, calling on those in power to abandon corruption, I support him.”
He also called Obasanjo a reformed person who should speak out more often.
“Let a spade be called a spade. Obasanjo is a reformed person and he is welcome to join in efforts to build a new Nigeria. I don’t know what he is, but I am saying that if he has changed and promotes service to Nigeria as the principal reason for participation in politics, it is better for him to speak out and see whether he can convert other people.”
