Mrs. Shadia Ayoola has asked the Agege Customary Court to dissolve her marriage with Mr. Dare Ali.

Ayoola claims that there is no more love in her marriage; that her husband threatens her life every time just as he has impregnated another woman.

Ali, a mason, however, told the court that all his wife had said were lies and that he wasn’t ready to divorce her.

He claimed it was because of their constant fighting that his wife decided to leave him.

He added that his wife once used a broken bottle to stab him.

He said, “My wife is very troublesome, she fights with everybody in the area and that is why I get angry with her every time. I have a younger wife that is now pregnant for me.”

He said when Ayoola heard about him impregnating another lady, she got furious and asked him not to marry her.

Because of that, he said she broke his television and threatened to leave him.

He explained that during the course of this problem, he became ill for three years and his wife never visited him.

“She left my house to rent her own apartment but I still went to visit her. She even claimed the landlord was making advances at her, that I should rent another apartment for her, which I did,” Ali said.

He told the court that he went to check his wife one day only to find his children sleeping alone in the house.

He said he waited till evening but his wife never returned; then one of her neighbours told him that she hardly slept in the house.

He said that he slept there till the next day but his wife still didn’t return and when he called her, she claimed she was in the house.

“I’ve tried all I can to bring her back to my house but she refused,” he said.

But Ayoola claimed that she left her husband’s house in August 2010, after he threw her things out.

She said after her husband threw her out, she had to sleep in front of her friend’s husband’s shop because her mother didn’t allow her into her house.

She said it was then that her father-in-law asked her to come and live with him, which she did.

“While living with my father-in-law, my husband accused his father of sleeping with me as that was the only reason he would have allowed me into his house after he (Ali) had sent me out of his.

He told his dad that he had no reason to accommodate me in his house,” she said.

Ayoola said immediately the allegation was made, her father-in-law threw her out of his house and she had to rent another apartment for herself.

She denied that it was her husband who got and paid for her apartment.

She said her husband stopped sleeping with her after he married the second wife.

The court president, Mr. Emmanuel Sokunle, advised the couple to maintain the peace till the next adjourned date of June 3, 2013.
