It would appear that businessman turned politician, Donald Trump, the Republican party candidate for the United States Presidency, is an unstoppable machine as his closest contender for the republican nomination, Ted Cruz, has dropped out of the race after a crushing defeat at the primary election in Indiana.
Cruz, in his quest for the nomination, has suffered several loses to Trump in the last few weeks, hence it comes as no surprise to political analyst when he dropped out of the race.
“Tonight I’m sorry to say it appears that path has been foreclosed. With a heavy heart but with boundless optimism for the long-term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign.”
Meanwhile, while Cruz’s path may have been foreclosed prematurely, the path to the Republican nomination for the White House seems to have opened wider for Trump as he has been declared the presumptive candidate for the Republican party.
This is according to the Republican National Committee Chairman, Reince Priebus, who had tweeted that:
.@realDonaldTrump will be presumptive @GOP nominee, we all need to unite and focus on defeating @HillaryClinton #NeverClinton
— Reince Priebus (@Reince) May 4, 2016
Trump appears to have changed strategy, as his campaign, as well as that of the Republican establishment, has refocused its attention towards stopping the Democratic party presidential candidate and former secretary of state, Hillary Clinton.
Clinton, who suffered a defeat at Indiana to follow Democratic contender, Bernie Sanders, is seen as the likely nominee for the Democratic party.
Trump had stated that “We will be going after her,” noting that Clinton “will be a poor president.”
Full of surprises and always standing on inconsistent rhetoric, Trump, who had early in his campaign attacked immigrants, Mexicans, African Americans and minority races, declared after his Indiana win that: “love for the Hispanics” and sensitivity to “the African Americans.”
“We’re going to love each other, we’re going to cherish each other. We’re going to take care of each other and we’re going to have great economic development. Hispanics are incredible people. They want jobs. The African Americans want jobs.”
