When the First lady of the country, Aisha Buhari took to her Twitter account @AishaMBuhari on June 21 to call Governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose an “unchained mad dog,” many observers were taken aback by the crassness of the words of the otherwise cultured wife of the President.
Fayose had accused Aisha of being implicated in the Halliburton bribery scandal which saw a US senator, William Jefferson convicted.
He alleged that the first lady could not travel to the United States of America because she would be apprehended for her role in the scandal.
Hence the outburst.
Shortly after her outburst, the first lady, through her legal representative, Mary Ekpere & Co. wrote a letter demanding an apology from the governor in 5 days.
The letter was titled: “Demand for unqualified retraction of the false statement published by you in various media on the 20th of June, 2016, and subsequent dates regarding our client, Her Excellency, Mrs. Aisha Buhari the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.”
After the first lady issued her warning, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Bode George said if Fayose felt he wronged the wife of the president then he would humble himself and apologise.
The governor however, as at July 1, 2016 was yet to apologize or retract his allegations against the first lady.
The controversy that followed Fayose’s allegations bred reports of the first lady vowing to visit the US just to prove the governor wrong.
Aisha Buhari’s threats and alleged promise might at the moment appear to be just like the sound an empty cauldron would make when struck by the side or the spirited barks of a ‘mad dog’ who has no real intention to bite.
If any legal action has been taken against Fayose by the fist lady after his stubborn refusal to retract his allegations and apologise for his accusations then it would be unreasonable to question the president’s wife and her law firm’s integrity, in the absence however, – a lot is left to be questioned.
