#YNaija2016Review: Emefiele, Daddy Freeze, Dalung… who is the worst person of the year?

by Wilfred Okiche

We’ll leave you to decide this one.

Justice Okon Abang

You must suck at your job when your colleagues in the Appeal Court describe your judgement as ‘’a fraud’’ and ‘’an assault on democracy.’’ Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, long in the habit of delivering controversial court rulings which heat up the political space unnecessarily when he recognised Jimoh Ibrahim as the Ondo state PDP gubernatorial candidate and the Ali Modu Sheriff faction as the legitimate one. Abang has earlier caused similar commotion in his ruling on the Abia state guber polls.

Temitope Aluko

Politicians are noted to have no scruples generally but Temitope Aluko took this shamelessness to new depths when he admitted on live television, his complicity in rigging the 2014 Ekiti state gubernatorial elections that resulted in the election of Governor Ayo Fayose. Aluko and Fayose later announced a peace deal only for Aluko to recant, claiming it was orchestrated under duress.

By now, the Osun government has been known for its inability to pay salaries. This trend which came to a head last year resumed in March 2016 when the government announced it would be unable to pay salaries for the month, at a time the economy was coming to terms with an impending recession. The governor was soon seen commissioning “standardized weighing scales.’’

Daddy Freeze

Someone needs to tell Daddy Freeze that no one is really here for his unfiltered opinions and desperate need to comment on every single trending topic. The Cool FM On Air Personality has been in the news for all the wrong reasons, thanks to misogynistic attacks on everyone from wife of comedian Basketmouth, to his own colleague Kayla Oniwo. His social media posts seem specifically put out to offend and come across in such poor taste. This daddy needs to take the chill pill.

Solomon Dalung

The Vanguard newspaper ran a stinging editorial in November calling Solomon Dalung the anti-sports minister. No surprise here as the thoroughly unprofessional Dalung has overseen the neglect of the Olympic team as they headed for Rio and mishandled the supremacy battle in the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF). Known for making offensive gaffes, Dalung was in the news recently for advising that Nigeria sit out the 2018 football World Cup in Russia for flimsy reasons.

Godwin Emefiele

2016 was the year Nigeria’s economy, once the largest in Africa, officially entered recession. This did not happen overnight as years of government waste, failure to plan ahead and a refusal to adapt to immediate changes all pointed at this. Emefiele as governor of the Central Bank has been such a mess, Nigerians no longer have any confidence in his leadership. He effectively surrendered the CBN’s autonomy and mismanaged the forex crises that persists till date.

Dino Melaye

Dino Melaye may have been awarded the Senator of the Year trophy by the shameful members of the Senate Press Corps but do not for a second forget that Melaye is the same person who hurled abusive and vulgar language at Oluremi Tinubu, a fellow senator while in the same breath,  threatening to rape and impregnate her. Melaye has also threatened to kill anyone testifying against the Senate President and his deputy during their forgery trial.

Ben Murray-Bruce

After his election in 2015, Senator representing Bayelsa East constituency and entertainment mogul adopted a populist rhetoric, preaching to #BuyNaijaToGrowTheNaira and criticizing President Buhari’s lethargic pace with the economy. Imagine the surprise when it turned out the common sense Senator was in fact a chronic debtor as assets of 3 companies under his Silverbird group were taken over by AMCON for failure to service a 11billion Naira debt profile initially owed to Union Bank.

Niger Delta Avengers

It is one thing to rebel against the system for a cause you believe in, no matter how flawed but it is quite another to take to destroying national and private assets so carelessly in a senseless bid to prove a point. The militant group, Niger Delta Avengers may have a legitimate claim but all of it was lost amidst the bombings of pipelines and petroleum infrastructure that took a toll on the economy. This at a time when the country is in a recession and oil prices are at rock bottom levels.

Lt E.D. Oworobo

In March, news filtered in that a group of women in Edo state, peacefully protesting a disputed land claimed by PRESCO Oil Company were flogged and kicked. Who gave the order? Lieutenant E.D Oworobo, the Nigerian Army Unit Commander stationed at Ovre-Eku community, Ethiope East Local Government Area, Delta State. Oworobo claimed that the women attempted to disarm his men. He would also go on to threaten reporters of The Authority and The Nation with violence.
