Exclusive: Fashola blames Jonathan for death of policemen in Lekki-Ikoyi robbery

by Kolapo Olapoju

Governor of Lagos state, Babatunde Fashola, has held President Goodluck Jonathan, responsible for the death of three policemen and civilians during an armed robbery around Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge.

The robbery occurred on Thursday, March 12, when the policemen engaged in a firefight, armed men that went to rob a First City Monument Bank in Lekki, Lagos.

According to Fashola, the President’s planned visit to Lagos led to the low number of available policemen on hand to take on the armed robbers.

Fashola made the accusation on Thursday night at the Intercontinental Hotel, Lagos, during the All Progressives Congress event, tagged: ‘An Evening For Nigeria’.

During the event, the governor said: “Today is a very sad day because this afternoon we lost three policemen to the robbery in Lekki and it was the first of its kind in a long time. And I also know that perhaps what will be would have been but it was sad to see all our security vehicles deployed to protect one man.”

“All the vehicles we bought for the police were stationed to receive the President in Lagos while the citizens were left vulnerable. Those policemen have children. Their mothers will be have to explain to them why daddy is not coming home,” the governor added.

  1. Whatabout the policemen in Tinubu’s residence? What about the ones that follow him about everyday. Fashola is a disgrace.

  2. Rubbish Na 2day who Na no say who Na no get security abi.guy re on the street roaming abt no job recruit dem and give dem good training before de whole wit in dis country naija become BOKO HARAM

  3. When GEJ was in Akure, banks in Ikare, Akungba and Owo were all closed to customers because there are no security operatives around. They (police) were all in Akure

  4. Fashola is a man having his sense of reasoning skewed towards partisan politics, what nonsense! Lagos state alone has more than 1500 vehicles for the NPF, the vehicles that was assigned for the president isn’t up to 50, what happened to the rest. Where are the other policemen that weren’t assigned for the presidential duty? Nigerians start reasoning objectively and don’t be subjectively hoodwinked by this self serving politicians. Even the poorest state in Nigeria can’t afford to give such a flimsy excuse.

  5. Fashola u re nt talking like a leader did he collect all d policemen in lekki or the entire lagos u re just saying rubbish

  6. The propaganda of politics aside. I am sure we have all made this assertion before. Whenever the president goes anywhere, the concentration of all law enforcement agencies centers towards keeping him safe. Fashola only said the right thing at the wrong time.

  7. e be like say fish water dey this guy brain…

  8. We need to examine Fashola’s credentials. Did he make SAN on merit? Thought he was the finest breed in the pool of the APC. Thought wrong.

    1. Common sense should tell you that security is lighter when the President is in town because of his security details. Fashola isn’t far off the mark by assigning the blame to GEJ’s visit.

    2. Really? isnt what he has said logical enough? do you need to be taught how to put 2 and 2 together to make a 4? REALLY!

      1. stupid persons would never stop behaving in stupid ways.. the truth has been said how i wish he has a brother in the police force perhaps became a victim of this i guess he would shut up his or her dirty mouth

  9. It is the truth. The FG controls the police, the army, civil defence corps, intelligence agencies etc. Until Nigeria gets to the stage where state governments can have their own police force, the FG will have to shoulder all blames for anything that has to do with security. And yes, the blame for the robbery lies with the FG.
The same thing happened recently in Ondo State (Ikare Akoko), when armed robbers robbed multiple banks and killed many people in the town, because all the soldiers and police were deployed to nearby Ekiti State for a GEJ/PDP rally.

  11. This man’s stupidity is beginning to show just like too long under wear.

    1. But its true Silly! Whenever there are any major events or rallies including the President’s visit to Lagos, , the Men of the dark side reign supreme cos the Police is preoccupied. Those badass guys yesterday were very intelligent to have studied and known this. Pity about the police and others. They were simply heavily outnumbered. God rest their Souls.
